Physical Symptoms of Stress

The physical symptoms of stress are numerous and all-encompassing because it weakens your immune system, undermining wellness in all your organs, glands and cells. In other words, ANY physical ailment you may have, is typically worsened under stress.

From my point of view, the mental and emotional effects of stress are often harder to cope with. The good news is that there are many mind power techniques, that you can put to work, to help alleviate both the psychological and physical effects of stress.

When under constant or extreme stress, your body goes into fight-flight response. Adrenalin is released into your system and “non-essential” bodily functions, like those of your immune system, reproductive system and memory, are switched off to conserve resources. All your energy is directed toward survival.

When you don’t know how to cope with stress in your life – and you have too much of it -- it weakens your immune system and causes all kinds of problems. Learning to control stress is one of the most important things you can do for your health, happiness and success.

Are you under too much stress?  Here are some warning signs:

Warning Signs:

  • Forgetfulness
  • Lack of focus
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Making lots of mistakes
  • Accident prone (dropping and/or spilling things)
  • Worry
  • Negativity
  • Irritability
  • Moodiness
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Feelings of loneliness
  • Depression, agitation,
  • Overwhelmed
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Joint pain especially neck and shoulders
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Frequent colds
  • Change in routine behavior e.g. eating and sleeping
  • Insomnia
  • Procrastination
  • Feeling listless or isolated
  • Headaches
  • Racing heart or chest pain
  • Reliance on drugs/alcohol
  • Unhappiness

Some of the Physical Symptoms of stress include the cause or worsening of these conditions:

  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Neck, shoulder and back pain
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Hair loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Reproductive dysfunction
  • Dizziness
  • Frequent colds
  • Irritable Bowel syndrome
  • Crone’s disease
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Insomnia
  • COPD
  • Coughing and wheezing
  • Heart Disease
  • Cancer
  • Gum Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney & adrenal gland dysfunction
  • Ulcers
  • Weight loss and /or gain
  • Belly fat

The physical symptoms of stress are only one aspect of the damage stress causes.  When people have difficulty coping with the stress in their lives on an ongoing basis, their relationships suffer, they tend to be more irritable and they often lose their joy of life.

The good news is that not all stress is bad. And there are proven ways to manage stress effectively.

Stress Cures

Not all stress is bad and there is no "cure" for it per se BUT there is plenty you can do to cope with stress so that it doesn't ruin your life.

Most people don’t really know how to handle stress. They don’t realize you have to relax the mind -- in addition to the body -- even if it is primarily the physical symptoms of stress you are concerned with.

If you think about it, it seems so obvious, doesn’t it?

If a scary movie can get someone’s heart racing, and make your body suddenly cold with anxiety, then what about mental horror movies, the kind that bad thinking habits produce?

It is not only that your mind and imagination can manage and prevent many avoidable stresses, it’s that your mind and imagination respond to your specific directions.  The power is under your direct control. And that control in in your mind is the most valuable asset you have.

So when you think about stress cures, consider a stress management program that includes relaxing your mind!
