Stress Headache Relief Mind Power Technique

  1. Get into a relaxed state by getting into a comfortable upright sitting position with your eyes closed. Keep your eyes closed throughout the exercise.
  2. Use progressive relaxation to completely release tension from your body. Progressive relaxation is the process of systematically focusing on one body part at a time, consciously relaxing each area as you go. After practicing it a few times, you can achieve that deep state in seconds by establishing "anchors."  This audio will train you to use progressive relaxation techniques and (after practice) get into a relaxed state in seconds.
  3. Once you feel relaxed, identify the problem and state the goal to yourself: "I have a tension headache and that is not what I want. I want to feel fine and healthy. I want to free the tension I am currently feeling and let it go."
  4. Tell yourself the solution, in this case, it is to take three slow, deep breaths to oxygenate your blood and release tension (you should already feel some stress headache relief from the progressive relaxation. Even if you no longer have a headache, complete the exercise so you can train your brain to get rid of tension and it's symptoms almost immediately. The more you practice, the quicker it works.  So you will say something like: "In a moment I am going to take three long, slow deep breaths. By the time I exhale the final breath, all tension will gone and I will be feeling fine and in perfect health. I will not have any discomfort in my head."
  5. Then take a very long, slow deep breath, exhaling very slowly. As you exhale image all the tension from your body flowing out through your breath. At the end of the first breath imagine yourself feeling well and say: "I am feeling better. The headache is gone."
  6. Repeat step 5, two more times. 
  7. Open your eyes and tell yourself "I feel fine. "
